FunctionLigand for the NKG2D receptor, together with at least ULBP2 and ULBP3. ULBPs activate multiple signaling pathways in primary NK cells, resulting in the production of cytokines and chemokines. Binding of ULBPs ligands to NKG2D induces calcium mobilization and activation of the JAK2, STAT5, ERK and PI3K kinase/Akt signal transduction pathway. In CMV infected cells, interacts with soluble CMV glycoprotein UL16. The interaction with UL16 blocked the interaction with the NKG2D receptor, providing a mechanism by which CMV infected cells might escape the immune system. UL16 also causes ULBP1 to be retained in the ER and cis-Golgi apparatus so that it does not reach the cell surface.
Tissue specificityExpressed in T-cells, B-cells, erythroleukemia cell lines and in a wide range of tissues including heart, brain, lung, liver, testis, lymph node, thymus, tonsil and bone marrow. Also found in fetal heart, brain, lung and liver.

Flow cytometric analysis of Human peripheral blood mononuclear (PBMC) cells labelling ULBP1 with ab224711 at 1/60 dilution (Right) compared with a Rabbit monoclonal IgG (ab172730, Left) isotype control. Goat anti rabbit IgG (Alexa Fluor® 488, ab150097) at 1/5000 dilution was used as the secondary antibody.
Cells were stained with rabbit IgG (Left) or ab224711 (Right). Then stained with anti-CD14 conjugated to BV510. Gated on viable cells.
Flow cytometric analysis of HaCaT (Human skin keratinocyte, Left) / MOLT-4 (Human lymphoblastic leukemia T lymphoblast, Right) cells labelling ULBP1 with ab224711 at 1/60 dilution (Red) compared with a Rabbit monoclonal IgG (ab172730, Black) isotype control and an unlabelled control (cells without incubation with primary antibody and secondary antibody) (Blue). Goat anti rabbit IgG (Alexa Fluor® 488, ab150077) at 1/2000 dilution was used as the secondary antibody.
