Professor Ryan Lister leads a research group at the University of Western Australia and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Perth, Western Australia.
His work focuses on understanding the epigenome's role in regulating cell identity and developing molecular tools to manipulate the epigenome and gene activity to control cell functions.
After receiving his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Western Australia in 2005, Ryan undertook postdoctoral studies in the lab of Joseph Ecker at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, USA, where he developed and applied new genomics techniques to map the epigenome and transcriptome in multiple biological systems. Following this, Ryan returned to the University of Western Australia in 2012 to start his independent lab.
In 2015 he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Life Scientist of the Year, in 2017 he was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholarship, and in 2020 he received the Western Australia Premier’s Science Award for Scientist of the Year and was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
